This is a great article about Jezra Kaye, the Brooklyn-based writing coach (and former jazz singer) hired to help improve (and shorten) speeches for Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees. Jezra helps inductees craft memorable speeches and ensures they come in under the time limit (a tendency to ramble resulted in previous ceremonies sometimes lasting four hours).
Some key takeaways for a successful speech, according to Kaye:
· Know your audience
· Read your speech out loud over and over before the actual day
· Limit the amount you say to “help bring out the beauty and the meaning.”
· Don’t go off-script.
Above all, don’t lose sight of storytelling. Despite speech time limits, Seth Markman, leader of ESPN’s NFL Studio coverage, said “The emotions, the stories, the real feelings, we don’t want to lose that.”
