A new movement to create dementia "villages" is taking place in Europe (the first, called Hogeweyk, opened in 2009 in a suburb outside Amsterdam). They offer humanized care to patients and their families, providing autonomy, community, and the care of trained staff. With villages continuing to open around the globe, there is a new emphasis on integrating them more closely with the wider community, to help de-stigmatize dementia and those living with it. One “microtown” in Australia mixes dementia patients, including younger ones suffering from early onset dementia, with senior residents who haven’t been diagnosed with dementia at all.
